Caring Cabin

Inspired by the memory of a courageous little girl named Alexandra Ellis, Caring Cabin became an extraordinary philanthropic project for the Portland-based Children’s Cancer Association that involved the donated skills and talents of numerous individuals, designers, artists, tradesmen and organizations to turn a dream into reality. Conceived as a ‘respite by the sea’ for families with critically ill children, the building is situated among deep woods sheltering a gentle lake located one mile from the Oregon coast. A composition of modern structures, the cabin comprises a kitchen that opens to a dining space and living room featuring a monolithic basalt fireplace, four bedrooms, a game room, a meditation pavilion and spectacular views. Features include polished concrete pillars, open timbers, and floor-to-ceiling windows that allow light and nature to fill the main rooms – all designed to lift the spirits of its occupants. Caring Cabin is truly a testament to the healing power, strength, generosity and meaning of community.
