Ankeny Plaza

Portland Parks + Recreation
Portland, Oregon
2,119 sq ft

As part of a great, creative partnership between Walker Macy Landscape Architects and Portland Parks + Recreation, TVA helped revitalize the north end of Portland’s landmark Tom McCall Waterfront Park with a new Saturday Market shelter. A complex project that involved numerous stakeholders, the design of the large, steel canopy protects visitors regardless of the season. Incorporation of the historic Ankeny Pump Station, a utility building that had been fenced off for decades, helps to merge the outdoor market’s narrative into stories from the past. New pavers, carefully selected to echo the original cobblestones that covered the area, help to define the entry to the adjacent historic waterfront district. The market podium, situated between the Burnside Bridge and the fountain plaza, rises above the surrounding plaza to accommodate roots of existing oak trees and existing utility vault elevations.
