The smell of good bread baking, like the sound of lightly flowing water, is indescribable in its evocation of innocence and delight... MFK Fisher, author

Lovejoy Bakers

Lovejoy Bakers

The activity of food preparation plays a dynamic role in the space.

Located in Portland’s South Waterfront along the Willamette River, Lovejoy Bakers is a locally run bakery and café on the ground floor of The Emery apartment building. Tasked with visually enlarging the café’s small interior space, the design team took inspiration from the building’s exterior palette and utilized a similar wood finish for the interior ceiling treatment. A large wall of encaustic tile behind the menu boards brings strong graphic patterning to the space, and the oversized glass pendants add visual interest to the wood and marble espresso bar. Industrial glazing separates the kitchen from the seating area allowing a strong interaction and connection between customers and kitchen staff. Taking advantage of the south-facing corner location, large glazed doors provide access to an outdoor seating deck during the warmer months.
