Banfield Corporate HQ
TVA was commissioned to design a new corporate headquarters for Banfield Pet Hospital—the world’s largest veterinary practice—that would accommodate the company’s tremendous growth and better meet the needs of their associates. Working with Banfield to create an innovative, collaborative work environment to support employees and animals, the new environment truly reflects Banfield’s cultural and corporate values, as well as their environmental stewardship.
Banfield’s initial intent was to commission a building that would house all departments on a single floor plate; however, the design team encouraged the corporate leaders to consider multi-floor office buildings instead. The final design consists of three office blocks of two, three- and two-story buildings, which span approximately 230,000 sq. ft. of office space. To meet programmatic goals, the design team encouraged vertical circulation within each building and horizontal connectivity between buildings. A glazed atrium space provides both of these elements.
The large atrium space provides key internal connection but also faces a central courtyard, around which all buildings are centered. The central courtyard serves as the predominant common space and also visually connects the structures. A three-story ramp within the atrium is easy on canine paws and facilitates regular interaction between floors. Stair enclosures were provided with hold-open doors to facilitate use of stairs over elevators.
The building’s floor-to-ceiling windows pull daylight into every part of the workspace, and the inclusion of a geothermal heating and cooling system, solar panels, and a rainwater harvesting cistern contribute to the pending LEED Platinum certification. Each building floor is identical to allow for ease of expansion and contraction of departments.
