Nike | Evergreen Office Buildings

The prospect of leaving the TVA-designed Nike World Headquarters for an “off-campus” location has always been a source of conflict among Nike division managers; however, when the company’s growth spurt caused their facilities planning team to lease an entire flex-office park several miles from the campus in Hillsboro, there was a great concern that the users would be discontented with their new location.

The design challenge was to create a series of spaces across the four buildings in the “campus” site plan that would foster the type of technical and creative work that was being done by the groups scheduled to be housed at the site. The design team created a palette of forms and materials that acknowledge and encourage connections to the sporting and international heritage of the Fortune 500 corporation, as well as their Oregon roots.

A palette of Douglas Fir (northwest native species and the material of typical gymnasium bleachers), Maple (the primary wood of the original Nike campus and that material of basketball floors), reclaimed wood from international packing and shipping containers (to acknowledge the company’s global footprint) are combined with the hallmark graphics of the company’s athlete representatives to create a dynamic, energetic, and thoroughly branded series of spaces that have been overwhelmingly approved by the users and leadership alike.
