Working with Ziba Design, TVA Architects helped Umpqua Bank develop a distinct brand and aesthetic that transformed the delivery of traditional banking services into a more engaging retail experience. Recognized three years in a row by Fortune Magazine as one of the 100 best companies to work for, Umpqua Bank rolled out the new concept design in multiple branch banks located throughout Oregon, Washington, and California. TVA ensured that the store concept was reproducible for various new and existing branch locations and provided a consistent look and feel that reflected the new brand.
The overarching goal was to challenge what a branch bank looked like, how it operates, and how it interacts with the community. The first flagship store, located in the Pearl District of Portland, was designed to be an interactive center and a hub that encouraged people to come off the street. Consumers were invited to linger and be exposed to products and services as one would in a retail setting.
Oversized graphics were designed as part of the displays, and highly curated walls served as backdrops to the space, helping to engage users. The teller row was situated at the rear of the bank to draw customers through the retail experience. Key to helping Umpqua Bank fulfill its potential was to “market” to the street and allow the public space to run directly inside.
