Klickitat County Services Center

Klickitat County Services Center

Designed as a flexible, modern workplace that supports important administrative functions, the new County building co-locates multiple agencies under one roof to facilitate coordination between departments.

Having operated for many years in outdated spaces with few amenities or modern conveniences, Klickitat County officials decided to invest in a new facility for their administrative services departments rather than repair the collection of old buildings that they had. TVA engaged with County staff and the public in several visioning exercises that helped drive the project development and approach. As part of the overall land-use plan, several existing buildings were removed, new parking lots were created, and reconstruction of streets and parks surrounding their historic courthouse were planned.

The new County Services Building serves to co-locate various County departments including Building Inspection & Planning, Economic Development, Public Health, and Senior Services, and consolidates these separate programs into one building to facilitate access by the community. Key to the planning process, and part of the massing study, was rethinking the relationships between the existing courthouse, jail, and public park, which all share the same downtown block. Additionally, an integrated approach to access control and security was important to staff and users alike.

The building is constructed using Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) that reduces onsite labor costs and construction time. The use of high efficiency heating and cooling systems helps extend the service life of systems, and lower operating costs.
