UO Portland Campus | Innovation Building

A space where research, collaboration and technology thrive.

After deciding to move their Portland campus to a new location in the city, the University of Oregon renovated the former Concordia College site for their own use. As part of the master plan, TVA transformed Luther Hall – one of the oldest campus structures – into the Innovation Building. This dynamic structure now houses UO’s Sports Product Design, Sports Product Management, Product Design, and the School of Journalism & Communication.

Built in 1949, the original three-story structure had previously seen two separate building expansions each with a unique structural system. A project goal was to spatially connect the buildings to improve circulation and to open up the windowless corridors to allow access to natural light and visibility into the new design studios.

One of the most significant features of the building is the former chapel. With heavy timber trusses and a soaring ceiling, the space underwent a comprehensive transformation into a dynamic interdisciplinary event space to support student engagement. TVA’s design approach was guided by the inherent qualities of the existing space which was adapted to support new uses.  By optimizing shared resources and strategically considering program adjacencies, UO seeks to cultivate a culture of collaborative problem-solving and experimentation.

With faculty offices, classrooms, and computer labs, the building supports students from all campus programs. State-of-the-art maker spaces facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration to address real-world challenges. The Innovation Building now serves as a hub of innovation and creativity, enriching the academic experience for faculty and students alike.
