The Women’s Center

The Women’s Center

The Women's Center features materials that emphasize both beauty and durability, while at the same time utilizing local materials to connect the building with the surrounding context.

As the first major ground-up construction project for Asante Health in Grants Pass, the Women’s Center represented a new direction for the design of their health care facilities. The building emphasize natural daylight in the form of transoms, skylights and clerestory windows, allowing light deep into the building while maintaining strict HIPAA privacy requirements. The two story lobby is wrapped with a glazed curtain wall, and a wood ceiling accentuates the entry while helping to connect the indoors directly to adjacent gardens. The Women’s Center program encourages flexibility of space, replacing the one-doctor per exam room practice, with more of a studio approach. Priority was placed on creating a comforting and vibrant space, to establish a relaxing environment that relieves the anxieties inherent to a trip to the doctor’s office. The color palette is warm, and the textures are on the softer side, removing the clinical edge often associated with health care spaces. Sustainable material selections reinforce staff work practices through incentives in exercise, recycling, and healthy living.

The setting for the Women’s Center is largely rural, and the surrounding vistas highlight the Rogue River Valley. A prominent water feature greets visitors upon entry, with flowing water pouring over local river rock to provide a place of respite. Ornamental drainage swales and a retention pond naturally filter on-site rainwater and is the first of its kind in Grants Pass.
